According to a new Chromium blog post, the Core Web Vitals (CWV) have reduced page load times by over 10,000 years for Chrome users in 2023.
The CWV are a set of metrics developed by Google to quantify the user experience on web pages. These metrics include Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), First Input Delay (FID), Interaction to Next Paint (INP), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), all crucial for measuring a user's web page experience.
Chrome team's research shows that these improvements have cut down page load times by more than 8,000 years on Android and over 2,000 years on desktops. However, despite these advancements, over half of the websites still don't meet the CWV standards, highlighting the need for continued enhancement. So more work remains.
Since their introduction in 2020, more than 40% of websites now comply with Core Web Vitals (CWV) standards.
That means work remains to be done, as over half of the sites still need to meet CWV thresholds. But the progress so far shows the impact a focus on user experience can have.
Don't forget
In particular, CWV-related improvements have led to Chrome users on Android saving more than 8,000 years in page loading times and over 2,000 years on desktops within this year alone. There were also gains in page responsiveness, amounting to an additional saving of over 1,200 years.
Google outlined several technical advancements in Chrome, such as better resource connections and improved rendering techniques. An example includes giving priority to image loading, which lessened layout shifts and enhanced LCP by over 5% on mobile devices.
